Project Statement
by J. Drucker
This work is a classic for its use of translucent vellum to create space and design features within the sequence of the book. Since one of the great cliches of book arts is the desire of new practitioners to use translucent or transparent pages in order to produce effects, having this work as a reference point is useful. The book shows how the interrelation of graphic elements on each sheet is subtly layered to create a spatial form while also making use of the discrete space of each opening. The theme of spider and flower, female imagery of weaving and petals, is countered by the geometry and minimal spareness of the design.
