copy number: 1
particulars: The following text is from the V&A Online Catalog (note that their description is somewhat different in detail than the one I wrote for this): Author: Minsky, Richard. Title: Minsky in bed / Richard Minsky. Publisher: New York : Richard Minsky, 1996. Description: leaves : col. ill. ; 36 cm. + 1 folder (43 cm.) Notes: Limited ed. of 10 numbered copies. "This copy of Minsky in bed is dedicated to Jan van der Wateren". Library's copy is no. 1 and signed by the artist. Begun in 1987, this artist's book contains a text (in the first person past tense) with commentary (in third person perfect) which record in intimate detail the artist's sexual history. The book is printed by computer in black ink on handmade Richard de Bas paper. The text is set in ITC Bookman, the commentary in Bitstream Zapf Calligraphic 8012, and the title and half-title in Americana. The book is decorated with illuminated initials, handcoloured and gilded, which frequently illustrate the artist's couplings. In the colophon the artist describes how new technology and ancient skills have combined to produce an example of "computer incunabula". Library's copy is bound, by request, in a pink bedsheet (cotton or polyester-cotton) belonging to the artist since 1979. The front board is covered by a section of foam wrapped in material from the bedsheet and a pink woollen blanket also belonging to the artist. The bedsheet has been used to make pillows and pillowcases which are attached to the sheet by velcro fasteners. The effect produced is that of a newly-made bed in miniature on the front cover. The book is held in a cardboard wrapper, with a museumboard insert to minimize handling wear, secured by a velcro closure and placed in a purple box. A prototype binding of the first chapter was exhibited at the Zabriskie Gallery, New York, in 1988, and at the artist's retrospective held by HarperCollins, New York, Apr. 1992. Library's copy is accompanied by a cardboard folder containing 6 card fascicle wrappers for chapters from Minsky in bed. Genre or Form: Artists' books -- U.S.A. 1996.
