Production Narrative

by S. Strang

The banana image was scanned from a grocery store circular at actual size and reprinted on an inkjet printer. The books were hand constructed in a single afternoon, with my mother's stapler.

Critical Analysis

by S. Strang

Design Features

imagery: The low resolution of the original newspaper print quality has been dithered to create an impressionistic quality.

openings: The book can be read page by page, or fully opened.

structure: The miniaturization of the accordion makes the staples a prominent feature and plays up the unbalanced proportions.

temporal features: Repetition functions throughout, both with the word "peel" and the banana image.

other features: A further function of the miniaturization of the banana images to "doll" size plays up the "actual" size of the maxi-pad strip, and calls perhaps uncomfortable attention to the repurposed intimacy of the object.

Peel

title note: The title is taken from the printed label that forms the book's accordion structure. [S. Strang]
