Production Narrative

by S. Bodman

As I had been given a list of available resources at VSW studios, I was well prepared to use the equipment to hand. As a VSW resident, I worked alongside the MFA students in the studios, which was a treat, I got to see what they were working on and join them for coffees and lunch. They were busy with a project set by Joan to make a simple artist’s book in an edition to all have a copy of each person’s book at the end of their project. Work on the book was interspersed with visits to the research centre upstairs to look at all the wonderful artists’ books in VSW’s collection, and to the nearby craft shops to buy ribbons and materials for the folio. The edition of 25 was mainly produced in the digital room, through Photoshop™ and Quark Express™ using an Epson 3000 and an Epson 2000 printer. Pages were scanned from handwritten texts and manipulated imagery. The book was printed on Velin Aches Blanc and Somerset Satin papers, which were then torn down to size for the folio and assembled in the studios. An etching was produced beforehand at The Print Centre, UWE Bristol, UK to insert into the editioned folio.
